RALEIGH, NC - Saint Mary's School is thrilled to announce that Maggie Kane, founder and executive director of A Place at the Table and TED Talk Speaker will deliver the commencement address to the Class of 2023 on May 21 on the campus at 900 Hillsborough Street in downtown Raleigh.
Maggie Kane is a dedicated advocate for food justice and a champion for those who experience food insecurity. She is the founder and executive director of A Place at the Table, Raleigh's first pay-what-you-can nonprofit cafe. Maggie's passion for serving others and her commitment to creating inclusive spaces have made A Place at the Table a beloved institution in the Raleigh community.
Maggie graduated from N.C. State University in 2013 and began working for a nonprofit with people experiencing homelessness. Her experiences befriending people living on the margins showed her the challenges of food insecurity and the importance of providing dignity to those in need. In 2015, Maggie founded A Place at the Table, which has served thousands of people in Raleigh with a dignified and affordable meal.
Maggie said, "With a mission of community and good food for all regardless of means at Table, we try hard to create a place where everyone feels they belong. We love being neighbors with Saint Mary's and are thankful we get the opportunity to have students eat, volunteer, and join in the magical community each week!"
"Maggie Kane is an inspiring leader and an outstanding role model for our graduates," said Dr. Adam Holden, Interim Head of School. "Her commitment to service, her passion for inclusion, and her dedication to improving the lives of others make her the ideal commencement speaker for our students."
Outside of her work at A Place at the Table, Maggie loves to jump rope, eat peanut butter, hike in the mountains, and enjoy all things sunflowers. She also enjoys watching movies at the theaters in those big comfy chairs, skydiving, and breaking away for a quick two-day weekend trip.
